Information for Parents on the updated Ministerial Order regarding Library Materials
Dear Parents and Guardians,
At the end of August, we shared government amendments to the Education Act, as well as a Ministerial Order, that impacted schools for the 2025-2026 school year and beyond. Since those updates, the government has repealed its Ministerial Order (M.O. #30/2025) on school libraries and replaced it with an updated version, released as #M.O. #34/2025. Once again, we want to ensure that parents are informed about these important changes required of us by the Alberta Ministry of Education. A link to the original article, released in September, can be accessed here. A summary of the key changes resulting from the new Ministerial Order update, #34/2025, is outlined below.
What Every Parent Should Know – Summary of Key Points
“Ministerial Order #030/2025 — School Library Materials” is replaced with “Ministerial Order #034/2025 - School Library Materials”
Ministerial Order #34/2025 - School Library Materials
- Replaced MO#30/2025 on September 8th, 2025, establishing the updated binding standards for selection, availability, and access of school library materials.
- Key changes include:
- Scope narrowed: Applies only to explicit visual depictions of sexual content.
- Grade restrictions now removed for non-explicit content.
- Library collection content is still made available as a public list; however, classroom library content is only available to parents of students in that class.
- A procedure remains in effect that allows members of the school community to request a learning resource to be considered for removal according to the standards set out in these new regulations.
- Key-Takeaway: Our staff has begun auditing library content to ensure that by October 31st, 2025, we are in full compliance of the updated Ministerial Order.
